MPA Network Design Tool
Selection criteria See also wizard approach of the MPA Planning tool
This tool automatically generates a list of species of concern that could be considered for specific protection as part of an MPA network in the region selected. The list is a suggested list of species of concern complied from species records held by FishBase (www.fishbase.org) and SealifeBase (www.sealifebase.org), and information on species distribution predicted by AquaMaps (www.aquamaps.org). The list is only compiled from the species in FishBase and SealifeBase databases that have associated AquaMaps.

The list of species of concern (the species list) is selected by including all the species that are predicted to occur in the selected region (with a threshold for probability of occurrence in the selected area >0.2) that also meet one of the selected criteria.

Endemic: Species are categorised as endemic if more than 50% of their range occurs within the selected region. This based on habitat predictions from environmental niche modelling by AquaMaps using a probability of occurrence per cell of 0.2 as the cut-off threshold for defining the total extent of the species' range.

IUCN Listed: Species are categorised as IUCN listed if they are listed in the IUCN Red List (www.iucn.org) with a risk assessment at the risk level selected or greater. This selection criteria does not include species that are categorised by the IUCN as data deficient.

Resilience: Species are included in the species list if their resilience is at the resilience level selected or less. This selection criteria is based on the 'resilience' classification defined in the FishBase and SealifeBase databases. Please refer to FishBase and SealifeBase for details of the 'resilience' criteria.

Overfished: Species are classified as overfished on the basis of the FAO stock assessment. This includes all stocks that are classified as 'overfished' or 'collapsed'. The FAO assessments are conducted according to FAO areas, all FAO areas that overlap with the selected region are included. Several FAO areas, with different assessments for a given species, may occur within the selected region. In this case the species is categorised as overfished for the species list if it is classified as overfished for any of the FAO areas in the selected region. Although the species list includes all species classified as overfished or collapsed in the selected region the FAO does not officially consider the data to be sufficiently reliable for assessment purposes.

Once the initial species list has been generated it can be modified by adding or removing species from the list.
